NORDIC AUDIO MODERN (en)

Consider this a report. Thought I should write something alike... It was a fantastic event, something that was obviously worth visiting, an event that will stay in our memory forever. Characters: Ligeia, Messalina and Sot. Ignore grammatical mistakes and clumsy way of self-expression, for I have forgotten this language long ago.

After hanging for a few minutes at "Platform 1" of Autobussijaam and accidentally noticing Volly of Bestia taking his city transport, we stepped into our double-decker "Eurolines" and departed towards the unknown. :) Silent, well-ventilated and comfortable bus packed only by third was a pleasure and so was the trip. Riga met us with quite nice, calm weather and once again under responsible guidance of Svetlana (aka Valkyria) we went to the heart of latvian alterantive entity - radio NABA - to meet our good friend Oliver of Discotheque Necronomicon, with whom we then went to eat famous latvian pancakes and later, having not enough money for sitting somewhere drinking beer, we bought latvian "LB" vodka and returned back to the radio. In the end, after having a certain amount of heavy alcohol, among which was our favourite and supreme vodka "Pervak", "Stoljanja", "LB", after meeting and being introduced to many great people that visited NABA, amongst whom I could mention chief editor of www.delfi.lv portal, we left the place and, successfully catching last tram, went to our night-stand kindly provided by Ruta, where we had to finish our vodka and also drink a few bottles of "Rigas Balsams".

I will never forget Oliver's morning kick and "you should be out of here in 30 min, you know". :)) Being a bit dizzy, we managed to leave the place in time and running as hell catch another last tram, which brought us back to Riga's bus station. From where we departed to Vilnius, accompanied by Svetlana, Oliver, Girts and Katrina of Semema-Industrial and several other people. The trip itself wasn't so hard, although a big bottle of orange fizzy water often helped.

In Vilnius we met even more acquaintances, among whom was local lithuanian guide with very lithuanian name Tolik, and, all in all, in a company of ~15 people, we went for another food/beer-search, this time led by Girts. Continuous walking around the centre of Vilnius and seeing it's many interesting views, brought us to a few places filled with too many citizens, since it was Saturday afternoon, plus there was some fair-action happening everywhere with huge masses and a lot of instrumental music in the old town streets. In the end we headed to the primary target itself - Moulen Ruzas, located in impressive large building, on top of a big hill with a wonderful view at the city - where everyone had a chance to eat, even though beer really sucked there. Being among first 25 attendants, we received our presents - Baltic Flour Mills CDs and Donis promo CD in nice plastic boxes and bags. Time went by and sounds of soundchecks were louder and louder...

The insides of the place weren't less delightful than outsides. A big hall that seemed like restaurant, with a big red/black placard on the wall with german eagle-stamp, eternally hailing h. jugend, and "Fuck you culture!" text at the bottom. Restaurant-area, where people had a chance to sit, have a drink and rest, is connected to a nice bar with blue lights, which is connected to the main concert hall, also big and impressive. Bigger and more pleasant than any place of such kind in Estonia. From the very first sight the stage shimmered with big video-screen, all kinds of equipment, pults, cables and most of all - light and smoke weapons.

The first to perform was Girnu Giesmes, with deep psycholedic industrial sounds that were definitely good for a start. They didn't touch my heart, but some individuals got very interested in getting their music. I'm not too familiar with lithuanian noise/industrial scene though, so my opinions about it may not be objective enough.

Donis followed second and mixed a joy to my ears with a joy to my eyes, merging many moments of his often rhythmic dark ambient with strobo lights. Perhaps that was a credit of event's sound/light-engineers, I know not, but I liked what I saw and heard.

Absolute project of the night was Claustrum. An opinion shared by most (if not all) of visitors. It's impossible to describe harmony of noise, power electronics, martial industrial and darkwave in general... So I won't even try to. Brilliant live perfomance of this outstanding latvian trio, who possess many personal aspects that truly deserve respect. This was the second time I saw them live and second time I stood with my mouth opened and nothing but tsunami of feelings inside after they finished their set.

Raison d'etre was next (must note that it was young-looking, a bit thin, bald swedish person, in black shirt and pants - Act I). I liked his video the most, probably due to being less vague and more atmospheric (some may not agree here, I know). Even though his performance was shorter than expected, together with many famous tracks he played "The Hidden Hallows" from "The Empty Hollow Unfolds", drinking his 3 bottles of beer and from time to time going to big piece of metal plate hanging on the wall to produce cold atmospheric waves of industrial nature.

Deutsch Nepal, represented by Lina, as usually appearing before public with several beers inside himself and a few more standing near, nonetheless left me under huge positive impression. And not only because I had a chance to interact with him before the concert actually started, discovering his excellent personality. His video was made of very old swedish porn movie, featuring number of women and men with excessive public hair, who got naked and done weird things, like dancing, behaving "naughty", having "sexual intercourse" with each other etc. In the very beginning Lina said something like "I'm having troubles with my wife lately, sorry". :) The background itself was hilarious, often making you smile, but with music and voice of Lina it created completely mind-blowing atmosphere. It was unbelievable how this very drunk man can produce such voice, such songs. I will never forget his greenish light one-hand-mic-holding, other-hand-cigarette-holding in psychodelic industrial ambient thunders screaming "Fire!!", "Fire!!"...

Act II: in the middle of Deutsch Nepal perfomance, a small door on the left behind the video screen opened and those who paid attention had a chance to see another Peter Andersson (Raison d'etre), dressed like this, with a bottle of beer, who fell behind a few big speakers and was photographed twice.

Institut appeared too monotonous for me. Too much of screaming, tracks that were similar to each other. Well, I got fully introduced to this project only now. Lirim looked like a real criminal, in black leathern jacket, in round black cap, with piercing glance, walking back and forward as he performed. Quite open and very social though he had nothing against any personal interaction, which also left inner positive fundament in me towards him.

Act III: Unfortunately, during perfomance of Lirim due to extremely long time of mostly standing on 2 feet, our backs started to ache already, thus me and Ms.Ligeia had to have a sit in the bar. Moments later that made us witness the following scene and experience one hell of a damn good laugh: P.Andersson running everywhere in his awesome ultra-stylish clothing, Lashisha - Nordic Audio Modern organizer - catching him and saying twice "It is time already!", "Bocksholm video is about to start!", "Go to the stage NOW!", Mr.Andersson calling "Liiiina, wheeeree aree youuu?!!", "Where is Liiina??" :))))

Bocksholm... A great show of 2 shitlessly drunk Mr.Anderssons, given 2 more beers by Lashisha as they started it, that made me forget about ache in the back for a while and enjoy a good portion of alcoholic humor. It can't be described with words, it must have been seen, for, I bet, things like that don't tend to happen very often. Except musicians' humor, live perfomance was partly saved by powerful background music and deep video that they made.

Error - a pioneer of latvian industrial scene with his impressive (once again I have to use this word here) noise act. Sadly, he played too late and people were almost asleep, though I managed to have a glimpse of his perfomance and hear the rest of it in the bar, afterwards not regretting of doing so.

Shnare.sys was the last. Myterious guy in a hooded black shirt, who's music I couldn't perceive already because of being in a sleepy state. Thus I won't comment it this time.

Obviously, in the light of total lack of similar events in Estonia and total absence of industrial scene here, our delegation enjoyed almost everything in Nordic Audio Modern. Even though there were only ~200-250 people (which was actually a good moment - more of free space - for those who came) and it was an obvious minus for Lashisha, the event was fantastic and well-organized. First of all, I hardly saw anyone younger than 18 (which is a common audience at estonian concerts). Good security, meaning big, impressive (again) men, looking at who you wouldn't even think of drinking your own alc somewhere, vomiting near a wall or behaving like an idiot, causing aggression. General calm, tranquil and decent atmosphere. Kind, mature, simple and open people (99,9% of whom know Russian language perfectly), a lot of new friends and contacts. It is truly great when people you don't know come to you, make friendly acquaintance of you, make compliments about your appearance, ask where you are from, ask "so, how do you like the event?", take photos with you (goth-girls from Panevezys ft. girls from Tallinn, for example :). And there wasn't a single musical project who's perfomance we did not like.

Taking a part in mini-afterparty on fest-after morning at appartment of a female who's name remained unknown, but who's hospitality and kindness conquered us (HUGE thanks for that!), being transported there together with v31 by Raimonds. Having 30-min-nap and receiving another wake-up-kick from Oliver, we rushed to the bus station and loaded into our Vilnius-Tallinn cargo-transport. Sadly enough, sitting quite far from each other again, we failed to share a bottle of good "STUMBRO" vodka during our Vilnius-Riga part of the trip. Thus at the 20 min stop in the capital of Latvia we received a little present from our latvian collegues. :)

Our great thanks for certain moments of delight, sometimes pleasure, during this trip and the fest itself go to: Svetlana, Oliver, Ruta, guys from radio NABA, guys of Claustrum, Girts and Katrina, Tolik, Gunta & Co, Vertigo Necrozak of Anapilis (better talk next time!), v31 :), ERROR, Peter Andersson (for a funny conversation and granting Ligeia own pink kerchief!), Lina, Lirim and many other people who's difficult latvian/lithuanian names we failed to remember! :)) Cheers from the upper floor to all of you!
